Light can transform a space, create a specific atmosphere and bring a feeling of well-being. For Jiří Krišica, the chief designer of Elite Bohemia, light is a way to connect people with nature. His latest work, the Iceberg lighting fixture, is an example of modern lighting design. This lighting fixture not only has an artistic value, but also reflects the beauty and fragility of nature.
Inspiration from the ice world
When designing the Iceberg lighting fixture, Jiří Krišica drew inspiration from the icebergs that break off the Antarctic coast and sail through the ocean. His interest in these ice masses, most of which remain hidden underwater, led him to the idea of capturing their captivating beauty in a crystal light fixture. "Glaciers symbolize change and transience. They are impressive, but at the same time fragile, just like our nature," explains Jiří.
Crystal, as the basic material for the Iceberg lighting fixture, was an obvious choice for Jiří. Its transparency and ability to refract light creates an effect similar to ice crystals. When working with the glassblowers, the key was to bring the textures of the glaciers to a smaller scale. “Creating the illusion of frozen water in crystal was a technological challenge. It's a process full of precision and creativity," adds Jiří.
Development challenges and triumphs
During the development of the Iceberg lighting fixture, Jiří had to face many challenges. How to transfer an idea from paper to reality when you work with a material as demanding as glass? The main challenge was creating textures that would match the ice patterns. The production process is technologically demanding – the glass threads must be sufficiently heated and ironed so that the resulting texture corresponds to the designer's idea.
"It was like coordinating an orchestra, where each instrument must fulfill its role exactly," says Jiří. As the leader of this team, he had to not only be demanding, but also come up with new ideas. The result is a lighting fixture that not only beautifies interiors, but interacts with the space through light. External lighting creates an interesting play of lights and shadows, reminiscent of the glitter of ice.
A message for the future
The Iceberg lighting fixture is not just an aesthetic accessory. Jiří wants his work to be a reminder of the beauty of our nature and the need to protect it. "I want people to realize that we have wonderful nature around us, and to take care of it," Jiří explains his intention.
And how does Jiří see the future of lighting design? He believes that lighting will always be a combination of function and aesthetics. With the increasing influence of technology, designers must adapt and integrate new elements, but at the same time remain true to the principles of timelessness.
A story told by light
If the Iceberg lighting fixture could tell a story, it would be a story of passion for perfection and the search for beauty in every detail. As Jiří says: "My work is successful when it brings joy to people. When my work makes their day, that's the greatest reward for me."
The Iceberg lighting fixture is not only a work of art, but also a silent witness to the changing world. It stands as a reminder that even in a rapidly changing world, we can find a moment of peace and beauty, just like when we stop to watch icebergs floating in the ocean.
